Monteith Hall and the Elyria Underground Railroad Story
Monteith Hall at 218 East Avenue in Elyria, once home to Rev. John Monteith, became a hub for abolitionism and a stop on the Underground Railroad. The 1835 house, remodeled in 1885 as the Gates Stevens residence, later housed the Elyria Woman’s Club. Monteith, a fierce anti slave advocate, helped shape Michigan and Ohio education, while the local network aided fugitives despite the Fugitive Slave Law. The Sandusky Arrow incident in 1852 highlighted the perilous efforts to free enslaved people.
