United Church Loses Baby Boom Generations

A study of the United Church of Christ finds aging membership and a shrinking number of children. The baby boom group aged 15 to 34 in the late 1970s is called a lost generation, with 45 percent of national adults but only 24 percent of church worshippers. Fewer women of childbearing age and a low birthrate mean few children are born into the denomination, which shows only 32 percent with children under 18 versus 66 percent in the 1960s. The trend mirrors other mainline churches though Catholics and some conservative denominations have more young families. The church also faces geographic growth challenges, being concentrated in the Frostbelt while growth has occurred in the Sunbelt. The denomination reports aggressive Sunbelt church development and new initiative starts, with a third of new starts in the region, alongside growing minority church participation.
