A Lorain County woman aged 30 recounts a descent from alcohol cocaine and heroin to sobriety after four years in recovery. Her interview with a former Children Services caseworker highlights opioid addiction, the agency's expanding caseload, and a 12 step journey while her 7 year old daughter observes.
Lorain County Children Services handles 1120 children with 101 in agency custody and 80 in foster care as abuse and neglect linked to parental substance use drive most cases. Ferris estimates 75 to 80 percent of caseload involve substance abuse while noting exact counts are hard to determine.
More than 850 runners joined the eighth annual James Kerstetter 5K Run and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk through downtown Elyria to honor Sgt. Kerstetter who died in the line of duty on March 15, 2010. Elyria resident Rachel Mazur ran with her 8 year old Dylan amid support from Elyria and Lorain police and others in attendance.
