La Nina developing ominously as Gulf spill cleanup on edge
Washington reports that La Nina conditions may develop in July and August, raising expectations of more Atlantic hurricanes affecting the Gulf of Mexico spill cleanup. Climate Center notes La Nina increases wind shear over the Pacific and reduces it in the Atlantic, boosting hurricane potential. The prior La Nina lasted from fall 2007 to spring 2008.

Heat waves expected to grow more frequent study finds
A Stanford University analysis using climate models projects more frequent extreme heat across the United States over the next three decades. Researchers Noah Diffenbaugh and Moetasim Ashfaq estimate average temperatures could rise about 3.6 F since the 19th century, with the longest heat waves occurring up to five times per decade in western regions and more than three per decade in eastern areas.
