Paramedic missing after sailboat capsizes on Lake Erie
A Parma Heights man, John Demattie, 30, disappeared after his 23-foot catamaran capsized about a mile off Geneva State Park. He had no life jacket, while Loring Dohn, the owner, swam free and reported the missing man. Rescue efforts were suspended. another missing boater, Robert Beasly, 35, from Marion, was reported missing after a separate Lake Erie incident near Niagara Reef where his companions were rescued.

Jobless rate up to 8.6 percent for Ohioans
Ohio seasonally adjusted unemployment rose to 8.6 percent in June, up from 7.7 percent in May, as the civilian labor force expanded by 58,000 and total employment increased by 32,000 to 4.7 million. Unemployed totaled 440,000, with services adding 15,300 jobs, retail 13,700, and construction 10,800.

Elyria man seized in firebomb threat at Limelight
Elyria man Willie Joe Alston, 27, was arrested after allegedly threatening to firebomb the Limelight bar on East 28th Street near Oakwood Avenue. Police said he displayed a bottle with a wick and a gallon gasoline can at the back door after being ejected. He was stopped on E 28 Street and charged with disorderly conduct by persisting and aggravated menacing.

Police detained Walter Artis 27 of West 21st Street after neighbors reported a girl screaming at his Peckworth Road home. Car on turnpike flips after berm collision
On a Sunday afternoon on the Ohio Turnpike near Elyria two families escaped serious injury in a crash. Elvira Lucansky, 60, of Youngstown, had a car parked on the eastbound berm when Kathleen Jones, 37, of San Antonio, Texas, eastbound, tried to change lanes and struck the parked vehicle, rolling Jones’s car onto its top. Jones and her son were uninjured. her husband Thomas, 42, was treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital. Lucansky and her husband Andrew, 63, were not injured. Jones was charged with failure to control.

County ends holiday without traffic fatality
Elyria Lorain County reported no traffic fatalities over the extended Fourth of July weekend according to the State Highway Patrol. Patrol noted 16 accidents and 324 citations countywide, with statewide totals of 15 deaths in 14 crashes, including a double fatality in Lucas County. Joan G Marks, 51, of Glen Ellyn Illinois, was hospitalized in fair condition with a chest injury after a Turnpike crash near Amherst Township that also injured her husband Peter Marks, 52, and their two children.
