Cleveland Emmy Award for Neal Van Ells Highlights Editorial Flair
Neal Van Ells, retired WKYC-TV chief, received the Board of Governors Award for his community television work and pointed editorials. He chided rival stations WEWS and WJKW for not entering the Best Newscast category, calling their reasons “pure hogwash” and “malarkey.” He said the Emmy is about excellence, not winning a single category. In local radio news, WGAR plans a July 16 switch to country music, filling a void after WHK dropped country. Paul Tapie’s WGAR morning show will simulcast on WKSW on weekdays and Saturdays, with Tapie noting he can adapt to country music and remains optimistic about audience appeal.
