Anti Truman Democrats seek an alternative after Eisenhower reiterates he cannot accept any party nomination. Truman plans a rapid response with party officials in Philadelphia as contenders like Douglas emerge, while Sparkman doubts broad support for any single candidate.
Pittsburgh report says about 40 000 miners walked out halting all steel company owned mines. Commercial pits idle after ten day vacation. workers refuse to work without a contract and election on union shop. Leaders say no settlement without John L Lewis.
Funeral services are set for William Ray Cantleberry 17 of Spencer at Parker and Sons Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Wednesday. He died Sunday morning at St Luke's Hospital Cleveland from injuries in a Thursday night single car crash south of Spencer caused by a mechanical fault. Four other youths in the car had minor injuries. Cantleberry suffered a fractured spine and was moved from Lodi to St Luke's. Survivors include his parents Mr and Mrs Oscar Cantleberry four sisters and several grandparents. The Baptist pastor Rev Galt will preside and burial is in Spencer cemetery. Friends may visit the funeral home tonight.
Weather forecast for northeastern Ohio calls for fair conditions and a cool breeze with west winds around 20 mph this afternoon and tonight. Wednesday remains fair and mild with a low near 63 and a high near 83.

Eisenhower’s withdrawal from the Democratic race after disavowing any nomination leaves Truman as the likeliest candidate for a full White House term at the Philadelphia convention. Anti Truman forces lack a unifying candidate, with Douglas favored by some Southern Democrats and New Dealers opposed to Truman. Ike reiterates he will not seek public office and will not join partisan contests, keeping his pledge while leaving the nomination fight unsettled until page two.
Democratic Party leaders led by U S Senator J Howard McGrath arrived in Philadelphia for pre convention meetings. Sub committees of the resolutions committee begin studying platform planks with hearings set for Thursday and Friday under chairman Francis J Myers. The platform is expected to stress housing inflation and foreign policy while civil rights policy remains unclear.
Crowds in Prague waved United States flags and praised Benes and Masaryk during a five hour Sokols parade protesting the Communist regime. Police appeared unable to stop the march as witnesses reported at least three youths shouting there is no republic without Masaryk were arrested.
Berlin faces a Soviet demand to annex the city to the Russian zone as Western Allies keep airlifts open. U.S. and British planes continue delivering food and essentials to more than two million residents in the western sectors amid hot humid weather and favorable flying conditions.

The Arab League says the four week Holy Land truce will not be extended and fighting will resume Friday. Abdul Rahman Azzam Pasht says a new Arab response to Ber Nadette's revised Palestine proposals is being drafted, with no settlement expected before the 2 am Friday expiry. He notes peace talks may continue for six months while clashes continue.
Observers note reduced Communist influence in western Europe Scandinavia Western Hemisphere Middle East and Africa while Asia shows renewed activity. Lorain county reports its only fatal accident of the three day holiday on Route 113 west of South Amherst. Caesar Rossetti 56 of Falconer N Y died when his car collided head on with an east bound truck driven by Donald Gibson 18 of R D Amherst. Rossetti wife Mary 51 and daughter Irene 14 were injured. The Rossetti party were en route to Wisconsin when the crash occurred at 1 10 p m Sunday. The injured were taken to Amherst Hospital and state troopers investigated with South Amherst police. The other two Rossetti daughters traveling ahead in another car were notified at a restaurant. The truck was owned by Mike Polansky. Gibson said he was driving about 40 to 45 mph. William Virgin, 26, of West 35th Street Lorain, was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital after a 1:30 morning crash on Route 6 at Baumhar road. His motorcycle, traveling east, struck a car driven by Darrell Emery, 16, of Vermilion, who faced no injuries. Virgin suffered severe lacerations to the left knee and injuries to the shoulder and right hand.
A state by state survey shows 604 deaths from Friday evening to midnight Monday during the Fourth of July weekend. Highway fatalities reached 273 with 187 drownings and other mishaps totaling 331, including five fireworks deaths and 10 plane deaths. California led with 27 highway fatalities and 11 drownings. Michigan and Pennsylvania had 38 deaths each.
The Ohio holiday period records 26 deaths including 18 in traffic crashes and three drownings with two in fires. Names and hometowns appear for victims in multiple counties from Mansfield to Cleveland and Toledo, with motorists, pedestrians, and a delivery truck fatality among the causes.
