Smart seat belts could preempt crashes with active safety tech

TRW and Mercedes engineers developed smart seat belts that tighten before a crash if brakes are hard applied or steering is sharply turned. The system, in use on the Mercedes S class since 2003, uses sensors in the electronic stability and braking systems to remove slack and restrain occupants, returning to normal if no crash occurs. Experts say such active safety devices, alongside airbags and crumple zones, offer the best chance to reduce fatalities, with NHTSA data noting motor vehicle crashes as a leading cause of death and costs rising nationwide.
