Spencer woman Vesta Neptune 55 died after a two vehicle crash on Rt 224 west of Lodi. Neptune suffered a skull fracture and other injuries when her car rolled over after being sideswiped by a passing car driven by Rose Marie Fowler 21 of Louisville Kentucky. Patrol reports say Neptune lost control. no charges yet as investigation continues. Neptune leaves a husband four sons eight grandchildren and many relatives. Funeral Monday at Parker Funeral Home Spencer with burial in Spencer Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday at the funeral home.
Mostly sunny and warm today with highs around 90 to 95 degrees and high humidity. Scattered thunderstorms possible this afternoon and tonight, with continued warmth Sunday easing slightly. Friday temperatures 70 to 90, with trace precipitation in the last 24 hours. Lake Erie small craft warnings in effect, winds southeast to southwest 15 to 22 mph shifting to west tonight.
Elyria youngsters entering Kindergarten in September will take part in a summer Safety Town program voluntary and funded by the Elyria Police Department and the City Club. The two-week sessions teach basic traffic rules using a miniature town with signs, signals, a police station, fire station, and toy vehicles. Patrolman James Oster oversees the program hosted at Hamilton School playground to help children learn safe routes to and from school.
Former President Herbert Hoover, age 83, spoke in Brussels about the relief commission he led in World War I. He praised Belgian people and cooperating governments for sustaining morale and unity, noting the program fed 10 million, cared for the ill and destitute, and taught lasting lessons from the war and armistice.
Honolulu reports planes and ships combing the Pacific 600 miles southwest of here for the crew of a C-124 that went down. Three airmen were saved from the water Friday, while five remain missing as search operations continue.
At Geneva an eight nation East West technical conference heard Soviet scientists reveal some secret methods for detecting nuclear explosions. Dr. Hans Bethe noted the data went beyond previously known technical information. Western and Soviet delegates reported mixed impressions with Russians offering more detailed technical knowledge while Westerns offered less.
The Independence Day weekend toll rose swiftly with 146 highway deaths by 9 am EDT, plus at least 62 drownings, three plane-crash deaths, and 24 other fatalities, totaling 235. California led with 15 traffic deaths, Texas 10, and New York and Ohio nine each, as the National Safety Council warned a possible new three-day record.
A 17 year old Greenwich boy, James Barker, drowned at a lake near Greenwich after attempting to swim across from a carrier aircraft base. Four crewmen and several air force personnel were unaccounted for or rescued, with the downed pilot Jonathan W. Brown and others treated for shock. The missing include Captain Charles Eaton Spears and several air and coast guard officers as search efforts continued through the night.
Paris reports President Eisenhower invited Gen Charles de Gaulle to visit the United States soon after a 2 1 2 hour meeting with John Foster Dulles. The invitation came as De Gaulle considered shifting France toward a different global role. A tragic river accident near Grasse involved a gate filter failure with witnesses describing the falling boom and the peril faced by bystanders.
Althea Gibson of New York defeated Angela Mortimer of Britain 8-6 2 in the Wimbledon women’s singles final to become the first Black player to win tennis’s top title. Mortimer pressured early, breaking Gibson twice in the first set and reaching set point, but Gibson regrouped despite early faults and claimed the championship before a large standing-room crowd.
Dr Charles Edel Huron County coroner ruled the death accidental by drowning. Barker would have entered his junior year at Greenwich High School in September. He was employed at a supermarket for the summer. Funeral arrangements are handled by Bender Funeral Home.
American Ship Building Company officials at Lorain yards studied salvage plans for the Grasse River gate-lifter after its 70 ton boom and 80 ton A-Frame collapsed spilling the vessel into the dock and Black River. Two workers were killed and at least 11 injured as 19 others either scrambled or were thrown to safety.
In Lorain the six mill levy for a new high school was declared passed by Trial Judge I E Culbertson after counting ballots showed 3421 for and 2281 against, just one vote over the required sixty percent. An absentee ballot marked by a typewriter was counted in favor, determined to reflect the voter’s intent. Funeral notices follow for two men drowned in a barge accident, with several others hospitalized and in varying conditions.
