Columbia set for July Fourth homecoming at Edwards Air Force Base
Astronauts Thomas Mattingly and Henry Hartsfield prepare Columbia for a Sunday landing at Edwards after a week-long shakedown. Mission Control notes crosswind conditions may affect the 15,000-foot concrete runway use. Flight tests include thruster checks, re-entry procedures review, and cockpit gear tuning. They flew to an altitude above 210 miles and tested the robot arm while documenting weather and atmospheric events. Both men are Auburn University graduates ahead of Columbia's first operational flight in November.
