OKLAHOMA CITY Roy J Puree, wealthy oilman and academy head, led the Democratic race for governor with a substantial lead as results from over half the state showed Turner ahead by more than 34 000 votes. Opponents H C Jones and Dixie Gilmer trailed, an eight man field largely left behind, while several incumbent congressmen were set for potential renomination in runoff elections three weeks hence.
