Secret Service limits on presidential guards stir debate
The Secret Service says it guards the President and immediate family only and has no provision to protect presidential nominees or candidates. In 1902 a guard for the President began, expanding in 1916 to include the first family, with Taft the first elected president guarded before the national vote. About 250 officers work for the service, with an appropriation near $1 million, and no routine protection of party nominees unless a special case arises.
