Newark Police officer dies after store robbery shootout

Police in Newark Ohio report Officer Harry Beasley died from gunshot wounds after a store robbery. Two suspects named Chilli cothe denied involvement. fingerprint checks did not match the bandits. A pistol and two empty shells were found in their car. Both men claimed Columbus alibi.

Garfield assassination marked by fiftieth anniversary

Today marks the 50th anniversary of President James A. Garfield's assassination. He was shot on July 2, 1881 by Charles J. Guiteau and died shortly after. Garfield, born November 19, 1831 in Orange Ohio, was buried in Cleveland after serving as the United States' 20th president.

A 26 mile pursuit from Cincinnati through Hamilton ended at Lourds ville with the arrest of Nicholas Arrigo 30 of Cincinnati and seizure of a truckload of Canadian liquor. He faces charges of transporting liquor and reckless driving.

Cleveland reports heat relief coming as rain and cooling breezes are forecast to end the oppressive heat. Ohio shone under a tropical sun with temperatures rising. one person died and five others were prostrated in Cleveland, with three more deaths reported yesterday. The deceased is J F Bollmeyer, 73, of Richmond Indiana, father of Fred Bollmeyer, GE public relations chief.
