Beaches regain sand after brutal winter storms
California beaches, stripped by last winter storms, are slowly recovering as rough surf returns sand along an 840 mile coast. Ken Jacobsen, Newport Beach lifeguard, says the sea moves sand back in a natural cycle, with some spots gaining up to 40 feet. Rescues at Newport Beach soar toward 1,100 year to date, as nine foot surf returns. Hermosa Beach notes erosion narrowed beaches from four to two or three volleyball courts. Overall, surf's up and beaches are back but not yet normal.
