Berea cancels July 4 fireworks over fundraising shortfall
Berea will skip its traditional Coe Lake fireworks show for the first time in two decades after sponsors could not raise the $2,500 needed. Doris Hecht of the Berea Chamber of Commerce cited poor donations from ice cream social and newspaper appeals. About $1,100 was collected this year, with last year’s $2,500 raised at the event. Funds may cover a stolen ice dispenser and cooler. any surplus will go to a future display, with organizers pledging to try again next year.

Three found murdered in Trumbull County field

Motorcycle helmet law takes effect July 10
The helmet law in Ohio allows riders 18 and older with at least one year’s experience to ride without a helmet. Local police and State Highway Patrol will enforce the rule until it becomes effective on July 10, following an April 11 passage.

Appeals court overturns extortion conviction in kidnapping case
The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed James Heller's conviction for extortion after he demanded 50 000 for help in freeing Owens Illinois executive William Niehous. Heller made five calls from New York to Toledo in October 1976, but the court found no intent to extort or real means to secure the release.
