Ohio becomes the 38th state to ratify the 26th Amendment. The House approved 91-9 after 15 minutes of debate and the Senate had passed it 30-2. Rep Frederick Young Dayton carried the bill. President Nixon urged 11 million young people to register and vote.
Viast night Ann Smith represented Lorain's Irish population and will reign over the festival until its close Sunday. She is flanked by Rosemary Gambino Miss Personality, Gloria Koltas Miss Congeniality, Maria Casey second runner-up, and Donna Dohanos first runner-up, at the Locain's International Festival.
Cynthia Ann Smith, 18, representing Lorain's Irish population, was named queen of the Fifth International Festival chosen from 35 entrants. She will reign through Sunday as the festival honors Lorain's 56 nationalities. Cynthia, a Admiral King High School graduate, is sponsored by the Lorain Ancient Order of Hibernians.
The United Transportation Union calls a selective three railroad strike for July 16 at 6 am to back demands for a new national contract on wages and working conditions. Railroads named are Union Pacific Southern Railway System and Chicago Northwestern. President Nixon has been notified and essential security materials will be protected. Negotiations have extended for over a year.
Elyria youths plan a National Freak Picnic at Cascade Park on July 3 starting about noon for Ohio and Michigan attendees. Keith Dick, 21, says about 200 flyers were distributed to Toledo Detroit Muskegon and other cities promising a family style gathering with no trouble expected.
Space experts dispute the likely cause of three Soviet cosmonauts deaths after their Soyuz 11 mission ended with the capsule returning to Earth and radio silence. Tass cites in-atmosphere fall while Lovell suggests possible reentry fault air system failure or wind-down from weightlessness.
The forecast calls for partly cloudy and cooler tonight with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny and cooler with highs in the upper 70s, and today’s high will reach the lower 80s. Lorain city solicitor John J Hritsko ruled Rowland may serve on both the Lorain Planning Commission and the Lorain Metropolitan Housing Authority. The ruling follows a June 14 vote where Rowland cast a tie breaking decision on an elderly housing project. The decision cites a state law allowing regional planning commission members to hold other public offices, noting the amendment appeared in 1969.
