Drought Tips for Lawns and Gardens
The article explains the limits of sprinkling during extreme drought and contrasts lawn needs with crop irrigation. It recommends shallow cultivation to form a dust mulch, about one inch of mulch for moisture retention, and mulching with peat moss, corn cobs, sawdust, straw, or plant debris to reduce evaporation. It notes lawns require minimal watering and that rain and cooler weather will restore dormant grasses.
Early hay cutting boosts cow growth and forage value
Agricultural studies show early-cut alfalfa increases digestibility and milk yield, while late-cut hay lowers protein and digestibility. Tests in Ohio and Illinois Pennsylvania reveal higher daily gains and lower grain needs with early hay, and fence bank silos store silage efficiently with low spoilage.
