Blue Ridge Quartzite Mine Boosts Industry Output
In the Shenandoah Valley near a resort area a quartzite mine yields a hard rock used in silicon alloys and other products. Extraction uses acetylene torches and dynamite to burn holes and blast rock, with initial drilling by compressed air rigs. Ore is crushed at two stations, washed, shipped to Alloy West Virginia, and sold for decorative ballast and contractor sand. Production may rise from 800 to about 1,200 tons daily in six months.
