Rare larynx transplant returns man’s voice at Cleveland Clinic
Timothy Heidler of Hollidaysburg Pennsylvania received the world’s first larynx transplant since 1969 after a 12 hour surgery on January 4. Heidler spoke at a Cleveland Clinic news conference three days after the operation saying it was the only alternative to an electronic voice device. Doctors expect his voice to strengthen in months while he stays on anti rejection medicine with a five year risk of organ rejection and a 70 percent chance the larynx remains functioning.
