Stare-Down on Border Highlights Cold War Tensions

On a snowbound hill near the Czechoslovakia West Germany border American Sgt. Larry Brouillette and a Czech patrol faced each other at close range. Since January 20 Czech guards joined daily at the post as U.S. airlifted troops moved into nearby maneuvers. Brouillette noted they read signs and even lowered interior charts to prevent leakage of positions. Both sides avoided crossing the line and agreed not to shoot, amid fear of border incidents as defenses prepared for a broader stand against suspected Soviet moves.

Loveland Crafts Cupid Postmark for Valentine Mail

Loveland Colorado gears up for Valentine day with a special postmark run by postmaster Fred Brewer and staff. Each year about 100000 valentines are processed to 50 states and many foreign countries, with Brewer canceling about 8000 cards himself. The town of 18500 uses a barebottomed Cupid in a cowboy hat and a verse for remailings. The scheme dates from 1947 and mailers send valentine cards to Loveland for redistribution. The Chamber of Commerce names Miss Loveland Valentine annually from local seniors.
