Two armed thieves robbed the Mercantile Bank on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach taking about $70,000 from the night depository and deposits stored over the weekend. They waited in the depository room for clerks to arrive, then fled in an automobile parked outside the bank building.
The 98th Ohio General Assembly enters its fifth week with major items. Senate moves to reconsider Defenbacher finance director vote while awaiting revival. Bills urge super highways second hearing and liquor permit rule powers. House considers Ferguson Act repeal and Oleomargarine sale debate. Capital punishment abolition and seven-division natural resources department hearing dates set.
Dean Rusk, a top State Department expert on the United Nations, was nominated by President Truman to be an assistant Secretary of State. He fills the vacancy from Norman Armour's resignation, and currently heads the United Nations affairs office. During World War II he served in China Burma India theater and later held war and State Department posts.
The thirty seventh annual Slyria Y M C A membership campaign will be announced at the Victory Dinner tonight with about 165 campaign workers present. Earlier reports show 255 memberships secured, leaving 295 still needed to meet the goal. Edgar V. Byrd, 41, of 559 Dairy Boalsh S50, a Navy veteran and trailer camp manager earning 250 dollars monthly, urged workers to visit every possible prospect before tonight.
Western diplomats see no immediate change in the international scene after Stalin expressed willingness to seek peace with President Truman and lift the Berlin blockade. Pravda front pages carried the remark, while Stockholm dispatches noted regional talks without a Scandinavian union. American Ambassador Fay Kohler said Truman would welcome Stalin to Washington, invitation open.
London observers distrust Stalin's latest peace offer as a bid to coax Western leaders. Britain sees it as a move to split the United States and Britain on Russia policy while Britain demands lifting the Berlin blockade before any German negotiations. Sweden and Norway discuss Nordic alliance links and a potential meeting with Truman but remain wary of delivering any joint commitment.

A head on collision on U S Route 20 near Norwalk killed Thomas W Patterson of Cleveland, age 32, and seriously injured Robert T Lowery, 27, driver of the other truck. A change in plans for the funeral of Sgt. A. B. Becker son of Mr and Mrs Sam Becker of 126 West street was announced today. Becker's body will arrive in Elyria at 4 40 p m Tuesday and lie at the Welsh Funeral Home. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Wednesday at the funeral home followed by an escort by the Jewish War Veterans to the Jewish Temple for services at 2 30 p m. Becker fell on a flight over the Rhine River on May 7 1945 the day before V E Day. Washington Fleming Newbold president of the Washington Evening Star died early today at his home after a heart attack He was 75.
The bitter cold claimed Frank F. Smith a 62 year old resident of 498 Huron Street. His frozen body was found on West Street near Waverly at 9:13 am yesterday after a friend warned him the night before. Coroner Tillman ruled death by freezing. Smith, a Troxel Manufacturing employee, is survived by brother Edward. Funeral services set for 1:30 pm Tuesday at St. Paul’s Evangelical. Burial at Ridgelawn Cemetery. Board of Education meets Thursday at 8 pm at 420 West Third Street. Also a brief classifieds note for Double Fagle Stamps and Crystal Clear Dry Cleaners.
Five persons injured in an automobile collision at Routes 57 and 7. Vehicles driven by Frank Zitko and Lewis Abrams involved. Zitko cited for failure to stop. Injured include Catherine Zitko Julia and Lena Abrams Rita Abrams. Also a separate crash on Route 20 injured the Duchows. Continued on Page 2.
Washington previews of the Atlantic security pact terms amid secrecy worries. Moscow accuses the Angl o American plot and warns Norway about joining while senators question a companion defense aid measure of about 1 billion dollars. The treaty may be signed mid March and last up to twenty years.
The Ohio River was expected to crest at 59 feet three feet above flood stage late today. Upstream, the river was already falling and officials said danger of major flooding from Parkersburg to Cincinnati had passed. The Weather Bureau doubted snow would affect the river, noting it remained around 52.3 feet this morning and should rise slightly to 53 feet before falling after the crest.
Harold Block, director of the Elyria City Recreation Board, will address the Elyria Rotary Club at the Y M C A luncheon Tuesday. Block is an Elyria High School physics teacher, four year coaching staff member, Findlay College graduate, and UW master's degree holder. A Texas born winter storm roared northeastward across Dixieland spreading heavy snow sleet and freezing rain toward the Atlantic coast and Great Lakes states. Severe cold settled over western states as feed planes joined Operation Haylift to aid imperiled stock. Snow and sleet disrupted Louisiana parishes and Georgia crops while Texas Rio Grande Valley and Mississippi faced ice and crop damage.
A Nationalist government spokesman in Nanking said the Kuomintang rejects a Communist demand to detain war criminals named in a list led by Chiang Kai-shek. The Communists warned peace talks require arrests first. The government would accept the eight points from Naotze Tung as a basis for negotiations, but no terms before talks.
The body of Pfe. Herman Boring of Kipton will arrive in Elyria Tuesday afternoon and be taken to Harold Dicken Funeral Home where friends may call Tuesday evening. The funeral will be at 2 p m Saturday with Rev. Walter B Crowell officiating burial in South Murray Ridge Cemetery. Boring, son of Mr and Mrs Howard Boring of Kipton, born July 2 1923 in Sewickley Pa, was killed in action in the D Day invasion of Normandy on June 6 1944. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and received the Purple Heart posthumously. Survivors include his parents a brother Eugene of Wheeling W V and three stepbrothers Joe Glenn and Charles Boring of Kipton and grandmother Mrs Mary Roper of Wheeling.
Nearly two hundred Elyria High student musicians take the stage for a gala Midwinter Concert in the high school auditorium at 8 p m on Thursday and Friday. The 82 member acapella choir directed by J Martin Beck the 80 piece band under Walter Vor Brock and the 39 piece orchestra led by Sidney P Davis perform numbers including Chapsticks La Vie Parisienne Persian Market Falling in Love with Love and Marche Militaire.
Reliable sources report Jerusalem may become Israel's capital soon with a Ben Gurion cabinet committee moving all ministries from Tel Aviv to the Holy City. Arab forces hold the old walled city and plans for partition favor international control, while Israel aims to include Jerusalem in its state. Dr Len Cohn is expected to submit a draft order for Jerusalem's inclusion.

Two night clubs reported burglaries to the sheriff's department. Richi's Tavern on Dewey Road suffered the heaviest loss with about $590 in cash, nine bottles of premium liquor, and a box of cigars taken from a chiseled open safe. The inner vault remained unopened. Stone Villa at North Ridge Road and Oberlin Avenue also saw minor thefts, including a small amount of cash from a cigarette machine and two bottles of whiskey, after the front door was pried open.
