Great Steel Region Scraps Old Routes for Cheaper Power
Youngstown industrial leaders push a new rail and canal plan to cut costs and restore steel jobs. Projects include a 13 mile Montour link, river rail coal haul, freight-rate cuts, and a 40 mile Ohio river canal to connect Rochester and Beaver to Struthers. Railroads oppose the canal, but the effort aims to lower material costs and boost regional production.
