Hippos Likely Closest Relatives to Whales Say Scientists
A paleontologist team analyzed bones and teeth from 10 hippos, whales, pigs, and 22 fossil ancestors, arguing skull features link hippos most closely to whales rather than pigs. The study, to appear in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, notes shared traits with anthracotheres and suggests a semi aquatic common ancestor likely arose in southern Asia.
