Coal strike threatens power, industry layoffs loom

Ohio Edison warns large industrial customers may face 25 percent electric cutbacks soon and 50 percent within weeks as coal supplies dwindle amid the United Mine Workers strike. Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co reports a 62 day supply and refrains from required reductions. Industry leaders fear widespread layoffs if shortages persist.

Blizzard Recovers Slow But Steady In Lorain County

Normalcy returns as workers resume jobs and power comes back across Lorain County after the Blizzard of 78. Red Cross shelters close while road crews, National Guard, and Army troops dig out. Snow continues with light flurries and single digit to teens temperatures. Death toll rises to 30 with more updates expected.

Light snow will end by early afternoon with up to two inches of accumulation. Highs in the low 20s. Tonight cloudy with more light snow likely Tuesday. Lows 5 to 10, Tuesday highs near 20. Chance of precipitation 40 percent today and tonight, 60 percent Tuesday.

Rescue pilot fuels up for Erie County missions

Andrew Overly of Monroeville refueled at Sandusky Airport yesterday to continue air checks of road conditions and deliver supplies for stranded motorists. He flew weekend missions for the Erie County Sheriff's Dept. and carried out emergency rescues from the air.

Snow blizzard kills motorists across Scotland

Helicopters searched for cars trapped in 50 foot snow drifts as Britain endures its worst blizzard in 30 years. Police reported eight deaths and many motorists still missing or buried. Bodies found include a married couple and a man in another car. two others died north of Inverness. A customs officer died in Ireland harbor winds, a Welsh climber drowned, and another climber died of exposure in Derbyshire.

Wreckage found of runaway Soviet satellite near Baker Lake

A Canadian American search team uncovered debris from the Cosmos 954 nuclear satellite at a crater eight to ten feet wide on the ice of the Thelon River near Baker Lake Northwest Territories. Lt Col Donald Davidson reported tubing and a perforated metal canister protruding from the ice. The debris was transported by Chinook helicopter to hospitals in Edmonton and Yellowknife for tests.

Downtown Elyria Warns Of Snow Clearing Parking Ban

Mayor Marguerite E. Bowman announced a citywide parking ban with special focus on downtown Elyria tonight. Heavy equipment will clear snow along downtown streets and drivers ignoring the warning may have their vehicles ticketed or towed under the ban.

Three New London babies born in improvised maternity ward

Three babies arrived in New London over the weekend in a hastily assembled maternity ward staffed by a pediatrician, a general practitioner, and a surgical nurse. The first, a boy, was born Thursday to Mr and Mrs Richard Warren after heavy snow blocked Norwalk routes. The second, a girl, was born Friday to Mr and Mrs Timothy Simmons of Sullivan with help from Sullivan Emergency crews and local highway and police. The third, a girl, was born Sunday to Mr and Mrs Gary Davidson of Mansfield. All three infants were reported in good condition.

Americans See Better Economy in 1978

Washington reports indicate purchasing power will rise about 5 percent in 1978, with overall growth near 4.5 percent. Unemployment is expected to fall to roughly 6.0 to 6.25 percent by year end, while inflation holds near 6 percent as investment remains sluggish. The projections come from the Carter administration’s economic report to Congress prepared by the Council of Economic Advisers led by Charles L. Schultze.
