Starbucks reports a 69 percent drop in fiscal first quarter profit and plans to shutter 300 more stores globally by year end, on top of 600 U.S. closures. The cuts aim for about $500 million in savings in 2009, with 6,000 in-store and 700 non-store jobs cut. Revenue falls to $2.62 billion.
Postmaster General John Potter told a Senate subcommittee that massive deficits threaten to force the U S Postal Service to consider suspending delivery on days with light volume potentially moving to five day service He noted the six day rule could be removed and savings found but stressed any change would require Postal Service board action and is not imminent.
The Blakely Georgia plant operated by Peanut Corp of America is linked to a salmonella outbreak prompting a large recall. Inspectors found roaches mold a leaking roof and other health concerns as the company extended the recall to all products made since January 1 2007. More than 500 illnesses and at least eight deaths have been reported with over 400 products recalled.
Lorain County Chamber of Commerce leaders report some positive signs in 2008 and plans for 2009.
