Chinese Vice Premier Teng hails U S China normal relations

Washington welcomed Chinese Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-ping as he and President Carter began two days of delicate talks on restoring normal relations. Teng called the move duty bound to keep world peace and stability. A brief protest disrupted security briefly.

Kucinich frames Cleveland divide over Muny Light sale

Mayor Dennis Kucinich spoke from East Side churches to frame a two Cleveland: wealthy downtown and struggling neighborhoods. He warned the city risks losing Muny Light to CEI and urged voters to oppose the sale while backing a 0.5 percent income tax increase ahead of the February 27 election.

San Diego sniper wounds six children at Cleveland Elementary

A sniper fired on the grounds of Cleveland Elementary School injuring six children in San Diego. Police reported no fatalities and that injury details were not yet known as officers secured the scene and investigated.

Diamond lady wins Rockefeller's last dime tale at hotel

New Haven reporter John Knoble recalls Nelson Rockefeller at a Houston Shamrock Hotel dinner in the late 1960s. An elderly woman in heavy diamonds asked for a dime. Rockefeller offered a nickel and then produced a cuff dime, explaining he kept one for a phone call in case of mugging, citing his grandfather's advice.
