New York Star Ends Publication Under Financial Strain
The New York Star ceased publication Friday after eight and a half years of operation. Bartley Crum and Joseph Barnes cited ongoing losses and lack of financial backing in a 90 word masthead statement. About 350 staff were informed they would receive regular pay through the week and termination pay as calculations permit. The paper began as PM Eight, later owned by Marshall Field NT of Chicago, and renamed the Star after Crum and Barnes took over on June 23. Circulation rose to 140,000 but remained unsustainable. Field retains a substantial interest.
