Six Bids Placed on Oberlin Home Boiler Project
County commissioners received six bids this morning for two boilers and two stokers at the Children’s Home in Oberlin but delayed action after Assistant Prosecutor William G. Wickens advised the bidding method was legally questionable. He said basing bids on patented equipment names cannot be used as standards and urged conformity with court practices. Architects defended the form as a standard PWA approach, noting bids were not limited to named brands and could include other makes meeting the standards. Base bids listed include Iron Fireman stokers and Kewanee boilers with amounts ranging from about 3,780 to 4,814 dollars. one bidder, W R Roboton, Cleveland, proposed alternate equipment and boosted competition by lowering his bid. Commissioner Chairman Oscar G. Dunn said Roboton would be contacted to confirm the equipment tied to his alternate bid.
