Traditional remedies blamed for poisoning immigrant children
A Houston mother gave her children a folk remedy called greta, a lead-laden powder, after grandmotherly advice. Health officials say Latin American, Indian and other Asian traditional medicines cause significant child lead poisoning nationwide, often bypassing regulators. Lead exposure comes from remedies sold in stores and by curanderas, with 240,000 U.S. children diagnosed 2004–2006 and testing rates only at 14 percent.
