Calif lab study prompts rethink of tank cleanup costs
California researchers say costly soil cleanups for leaking fuel tanks may be unnecessary, urging fewer required remediations. Ohio regulators doubt immediate regulatory changes, leaving city and county owners facing steep, potentially avoidable costs. Elyria weighs savings if Ohio rules loosen, awaiting Cedar Street fire station test results in about two weeks. Cleanup costs rise with contamination. benzene levels could boost waste designation and expenses. The Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Relief Bureau reimburses many costs to owners.
