CAPE CANAVERAL Florida AP reports the space shuttle Challenger exploded during ascent with seven crew aboard including Christa McAuliffe the first U S teacher in space. Debris fell into the Atlantic debris field and recovery teams moved toward the site as mission control assessed the disaster.
Oberlin College mourns sophomore Annette Kritzer and junior Ann Schaening, biology majors active in environmental studies. Kritzer planned a career in environmental studies and biology and helped in Save the Whale. Schaening, an off campus resident, pursued pottery and art. Both had recently returned from an January independent study at Meadowbrook Project in Fox Arkansas when the fatal accident occurred.

Elyria assistant prosecutor Jonathan Rosenbaum disclosed he accepted a 2590 loan in 1980 from Carson Chlepciak, son of bail bondsman John J. Chlepciak who owns Katina Lake Sportsman's Club in North Ridgeville. He repaid the loan with 12 percent interest and says he cut ties when he learned of alleged club improprieties amid a gambling raid.
The Labor Department said 1985 first year wage increases in major collective bargaining contracts averaged 2.3 percent, the lowest in 18 years. Over two thirds of workers saw raises averaging 4.2 percent, while 15 percent experienced freezes or pay cuts averaging 8.8 percent.
Two Oberlin College students Annette Kritzer and Ann Schoening died when a van carrying students from Meadowbrook Project collided with a tractor trailer on Interstate 70 near Altamont Illinois. Driver David Ryan and tractor trailer driver Desert Neidigh were charged for speeds and failure to reduce speed. seven students were injured but survived.
