8 000 HOMELESS IN 3 STATE FLOOD
Miss Neva Houghtlen 19 of East Townsend Ohio was killed when a car she rode in with Russell Travalca 21 of Wellington collided with a New York Central freight at Pitts road crossing near Norwalk. Travalca escaped injury but was shocked. He had picked her up at Patsy’s truck stop en route to Lyle Ziegler’s. fog hid the train until the crash. The car was demolished and Houghtlen died at 11:15 pm Saturday. The Grand Jury urged courthouse additions, juvenile detention facilities, and bids for Pleasant View Sanatorium supplies along with welfare accountability.

Three month old James Campbell IV, son of Lt and Mrs James Campbell, was found dead in his grandmother’s Wellington home at 6 am. Fire resuscitation efforts failed. Car Swerves Into Path Of Truck Injures Two Men
Sam Banks 46 of 731 West 16th Street Elyria and Frank Ball 20 of S710 Elyria Avenue were injured when Banks swerved while taking a curve on Elyria Avenue and skidded into a northbound truck driven by James T Martin of Stop Route 254 Elynn. Banks suffered lacerations to the left eyelid and possible chest injuries. Ball had a scalp laceration. Both were taken to St Josephs Hospital for observation. Banks was arrested for driving on the left side of the road.

Fire Investigation After Mattress Fire House on East River Street
Carlisle firemen and Humane Society and attorney Bruce Alexander investigated a mattress fire at the A J Fuller residence on East River Street near Route 10. Four children aged 2 to 11 were home alone when the fire occurred Saturday afternoon. Neighbors carried the burning mattress from the house as deputy sheriffs and firefighters responded. Firemen believe the blaze started when children played with matches.

One Way Traffic On Second Third Streets Planned
Elyria safety leader D W Kothe announced plans to designate Second and Third streets as one way to ease congestion. Westbound traffic on Second from Chestnut to Cedar and eastbound on Third from Chestnut to West Avenue are slated pending weather. Registrants Leave For Examinations In Elyna Area
Fifty two draft registrants departed Elyna at eight o clock to undergo induction physical and mental examinations in Cleveland to determine fitness for future military service. The group was led by Jack Gerhardinger of Butternut Ridge Road with assistant leader William Coon of Chestnut Ridge Road.

Draft Flips Plane Over Five Injured In Ohio Flood
A three state flood left almost 8 000 homeless and at least six dead as the Ohio River rose rapidly. The flood crest was forecast near 49 feet with wide areas evacuated and 600 cots plus 1 200 blankets sent to assist about 30 towns. National Guardsmen were deployed in Marietta Steubenville and Wheeling as crews battled wreckage and drowning.
