The Rent Stabilization Committee of the Cleveland Apartment House Owners Association decided to use a rental provision to charge more rent by renting units to families with children. Area Rent Director Earl Duldeners said it was the first organized group of landlords to act on this provision.
The provision within rent regulations lets landlords raise rents for units given to families with children. Local officials note a shift from favoring very small families to larger ones, seeing long term rent control as a reason to capitalize on turnover. Approval by the Apartment House Owners Association could place larger families ahead for 260 to 600 units available monthly through turnover.
Peter Kinnear, state president of the Ohio Apartment and Rooming House Association, urged evicting single tenants to free units for families amid housing shortages. He criticized Tulsa landlords who evicted 600 families over rent controls and called for government limits on occupants per apartment, citing European solutions. Julia Oliver of the Columbus association also spoke.
Mrs. Oliver states no local members will back the Tulsa plan in which landlords withdraw property from the rental market. She adds that while preferring not to have rent controls she believes the rent laws are administered fairly for all residents.
Russell H. Knoop of the Farmers Home Administration will hold office hours for FHA borrowers in Elyria on Tuesday afternoon February 1 from 1 to 3 pm. The session will be in Room 207 OPS Building 405 Grand Street at the Lorain County Agri Conservation Association.
Ohio sales tax receipts fell 13 percent in the first two weeks of the year, totaling 4.3 million dollars versus 4.96 million a year ago.
