Lake Erie Ice Giant: Dangers and Dives in Winter Silence
Vermilion residents and historians describe Lake Erie’s winter ice as a quiet, stunning expanse that hides risks. Ice fishing and sailing thrill seekers face breaks, floods, and high speeds, while the Coast Guard works to prevent disasters as storms and thaw events threaten mariners. Historical notes recall the 1909 Marquette and Bessemer No. 2 tragedy, underscoring ice’s peril beneath the beauty.
