Hijacker killed by FBI after ransom flight from Albany

Heinrich Von George 45 of Brockton Massachusetts hijacked Mohawk Airlines F227 from Albany to New York City and redirected to Westchester County Airport. He released 42 passengers, seized $200000 in ransom and held stewardess Hileen McAllister at gunpoint before being shot by an FBI agent as he tried to escape in a car.

Harshaw Chemical workers strike after contract impasse at Elyria plant

About 300 members of International Chemical Workers Union Local 73 rejected Harshaw Chemical Co final offer and began strike. Picket lines at 8 a.m. blocked access while salaried staff permitted through. The union seeks higher wages and improved fringe benefits after rejecting three prior proposals amid wage price freeze policies. Local 10 in Cleveland coordinating action with Local 73. Negotiations paused after company offered two modest first year options and a pension tweak, with the union pressing for larger gains in both wage and benefits.

Oberlin officers and chief to testify in gambling probe

Lorain County grand jury began hearings with state investigator C D Phillips first. Oberlin Police Chief Lawrence Nowery and Officers Robert K Jones and Michael Kelly due to testify. Other witnesses including Joseph Siegler and Letco Toyota staff were listed, with possible extension of the probe.

Peterson replaces Stans as commerce secretary

President Nixon announced Maurice Stans resignation from the Commerce post and named Peter G. Peterson, his international economic policy adviser, to succeed him. Stans will join Nixon’s re election campaign leaving public office to assist the party.
