A 20 year old Cleveland Heights man was arrested early Sunday after attempting to rob a Shell gas station on Bagley Road. He allegedly pointed a sawed off shotgun at the attendant, demanded money and the wallet, then fled. Police tracked his 1976 Chevrolet Impala to I 480 near West 150th Street and boxed him in with Brook Park and Middlebury Heights cruisers. He is to be charged with armed robbery in Berea Municipal Court. The name was withheld pending court appearance.
Fire Sunday afternoon destroyed a Route 511 home about half a mile south of Kipton. Owned by Phillip Gregory and occupied by his brother and family, the 1 1/2 story house burned around its chimney from a wood stove heat source. The family was at home at noon and escaped unharmed as firefighters remained on scene until about 2 30 p.m. The auxiliary contacted the Red Cross for temporary family assistance.
Elyria police and fire crews logged multiple incidents including a man arrested after threatening a gas station patron with a club on Lorain Boulevard, motorist crashes on Lorain Boulevard, Clinton Street at Bell Avenue, and Gulf Road near Route 2 overpass, false fire alarms on Case Avenue and Broad Street, a seizure assist on Fourth Street East Avenue, and a vending machine vandalism on East Avenue. No injuries reported in the crashes.
Mud Island at Memphis will become a 963 million, 50 acre education and entertainment center devoted to the Mississippi River. The attraction opens in July and features a five block long River Walk beside a flowing scale model of the river plus exhibits on folklore geography biology hydrology and culture and river boat rides.
