Economy-driven truck traffic climbs in northwestern Ohio
An Ohio Department of Transportation study finds truck traffic rose sharply on eight northwest highways since 1990, with U.S. 24 up 128 percent. Tolls from the Ohio Turnpike had only a slight effect, while a strong economy in steel and autos drove increases. Officials warn of higher share of trucks on routes like U.S. 24 and U.S. 30, affecting passing opportunities and safety. Local groups urge widening U.S. 24 from Toledo to Fort Wayne and note traffic growth may continue regardless of tolls.

After a decade of crowds between 10 000 and 12 000 the Great Outdoor Underwear Festival in Piqua is canceled due to a shortage of volunteers. Co chairs Doug Stilwell and Phil Schnippel said recruitment fatigue and aging organizers ended the event. Diana Thompson of the Miami County Visitors and Convention Bureau noted the effort required and diminishing new volunteers. The festival celebrated Piqua hosiery history with celebrity underwear auctions and novelty events like the Joe Boxers Drop Seat Trot five kilometer run.
