Americans’ love affair with cars grows despite costs
A Commerce Department report covering 1967 to 1977 shows urban travel rising 60 percent and total miles driven up 50 percent, with passenger miles up 40 percent. The gains occur despite high fuel costs from the 1973-74 oil embargo, and licensed drivers rising only 33 percent. Private cars dominate intra city travel at 85-90 percent.
