$4.5 Million Facelift Underway at Elyria Water Plant
Elyria’s five acre Lake Erie shore plant is undergoing a federally funded expansion worth 45 million dollars to serve 115,000 people into the 1990s. Construction began last August 12 and is 2 percent complete. The project will boost daily capacity from 12 to 22 million gallons with new clearwell and filter facilities, upgraded pipes, pumping, chemicals, and a rebuilt power substation. The contractor Nelson and Co. targets November 1970 completion, with optimistic progress despite subzero temperatures. The 1,250,000 gallon clearwell is already completed and poised for spring service.

Police Fortify Brons Tenement Siege Against Imaginary Sniper
New York officers crouched behind patrol cars during an 80 minute siege after believing a mad sniper fired on them and his family from a first floor Brons tenement. Investigators later found the gunfire was the bang of a bat against a metal door. Rufus Lemmons, described as mentally ill, was detained for observation with no charges filed.

Boy saved after seven hours in 10 inch well shaft
In South Miami a two year old boy named John Reynolds UST was pulled from a narrow 10 inch irrigation well shaft after nearly seven hours. Sheriff’s Deputy Bill Team and construction worker Fred Knecht recovered the child who was muddy and sobbing, and he was transported to a nearby hospital with his mother praying.

Vermilion Motorist Killed In Icy Bridge Crash
VERMILION An icy bridge yesterday afternoon caused the death of Vermilion resident French H. Lantz, 48, of 453 Niagara Rd. He died at Lorain St Joseph Hospital after a 1 40 p m crash on the Vermilion on the Lake span. Lantz was westbound when his car skidded left of center into Georgia Harris, 18, of 2296 North Ridge Rd Amherst. Harris’s car struck Lantz’s vehicle in the eastbound curb lane. Both were taken to the hospital. Harris was treated for cuts and bruises and released. Police found Lantz upright in the front seat. seat belts were not in use, and belting might have saved him. Funeral arrangements will be handled by Fisher Funeral Home, Vermilion.

Gas line blast tears through downtown Houma killing three
A gas line explosion in central Houma Louisiana leveled part of the downtown area near Latours Jewelry Store. Three city employees were killed and about two dozen injured as a huge blast felled storefronts and shattered windows for blocks. National Guardsmen aided evacuation while responders battled a lingering gas leak.

Senate drug bill moves toward passage despite extended session
The Senate, after an unusual Saturday session, could not finish debate on a bill to sharply reduce penalties for drug use and sale from marijuana to heroin. Backed by bipartisan support and the Nixon administration, the measure would lessen penalties, make possession a misdemeanor, and focus harsher penalties on professional drug traffickers. Debate continues with a vote slated for tomorrow or Tuesday, and House action would follow if approved.

Civilian masquerades as soldier to serve with Army in Germany
A U.S. civilian, David E Major of Garvin Indiana, served four months under a soldier’s identity with the 24th Infantry Division at Augsburg Germany. He was identified by fingerprints and sent home from Munich. The Army said Major used Pfc Robert Addison’s papers, Addison now at Ft Sheridan Illinois. The incident began after Addison’s leave in the United States last year.
