Elyria Community Chest Elects Seven New Trustees

The Elyria Community Chest held its 33rd annual meeting voting to elect seven new trustees and increasing membership from 100 to 150. President Norris Ryder praised Attorney Archie West for leading the 1952 Chest campaign to a successful finish. Treasurer A. H. Waters reported 69,761.62 of 134,408.54 pledged for 1952 had been collected by December 34, 1951, with 5,417 allocated to local Red Feather services, 4,164 to state and national agencies, and 11,469.40 to campaign and administrative costs, totaling 110,160.50. Turnpike prep in Elyria delays? steel import questions rise

An Elyria report on lowering the Pike level outlines options to depress the proposed Ohio Turnpike toll road. Edward Donnelly of J. G Greiner Co. told the Ohio Turnpike Commission in Columbus the study will span several weeks. Chairman James Shocknessy rejected foreign steel for the $310 million project, stressing a push for American steel and awaiting coordination with Secretary of Commerce Charles Sawyer. The commission discussed feeder routes from Cleveland to the western terminus and noted foreign steel sources beyond the Iron Curtain.

Longtime City Auditor A C Schilleman Dies At 73

Elyria obituary notes A C Schilleman city auditor for sixteen years died at his home at 230 Gates Avenue at 6:50 am. He had been bedfast ten days after long illness and was 73 years old last Oct. 29. Indictments Returned by Grand Jury Today

Grand jury returned 135 indictments this session, adding to 1338 issued yesterday. Among the new charges are two secret indictments for non support and a burglary count against Eli Vickers for entering Mrs Edward Pierce’s home at Tremont Street. Several indictments target James R McGinty, George Brass, Albert Piscione, Allison, Louis Halitzka, and Robert Southard of Lorain for multiple burglaries, larcenies, and robberies across Lorain and neighboring counties. Confessions relate to burglaries at Rich's Tavern, Gardner's Garage, Leimbach’s service station, Jerry’s Blue Sunpeo, two softy grackmeg jobs at International Harvester agency, Norwalk Truck Lane, truck tire theft from Fruchauf Trailer, trailer theft from an Avon owner, and the robbery of Donald Johnson. Man Sues Tube Co for 200,000 in Ohio Court

Robert W. Harper of Fairview Park sues National Tube Co and Scholl-Chaffin Co for 200000 claiming injuries from a work incident at a blooming mill. Boys' Condition Improves After Motorcycle Collision

Two young riders, Jack Sharpe and Fred Stauder Jr, were hurt when their motorcycle collided with a city bus Tuesday morning. Both are listed in fair condition. Gas Well Fire Damage Unknown Near Avon Ridgeville

Fire at a gas well on the Frank Lerner property near the Avon Ridgeville Township line on Muir road left damage estimates unavailable at noon today. Chief L. R. Hadaway reported crews were still assessing rigging damage from yesterday's blaze.

Steam Pipe Leak Forces School Closure and Fire

An accidental leak in a steam pipe at St. John's Lutheran School caused a small fire after a gas pocket ignited. Firemen fought the blaze. two Ridgeville volunteers were knocked down by an explosion but not injured. Pipe repairs began and the school planned to reopen Monday morning with most structure intact.
