5000 Year Old Ur Death Pit Unearths 48 Bodies Riches
An international team led by University of Pennsylvania Museum and the British Museum reports a large death pit at Ur of the Chalders containing 45 bodies, 39 women, with extensive gold and silver ornaments. Among the finds are three harps, two ram statues, a canopy, from a burial rite likely linked to royal or elite sacrifice. Fieldwork continues as workers uncover wagon remains and animal offerings, with the pit described as larger than any previous in the 6500 year old cemetery.
