President Obama plans a State of the Union Address to show he is on the people’s side and connect his agenda to middle class concerns. Aides say the speech will stress progress and guard against empty rhetoric while guiding a wary Democratic base toward a sellable, coherent plan.
Lorain County Probate Judge James Walther met President Obama three times during a Lorain County Community College town hall visit. Walther invited Obama to watch the Cavaliers versus the Thunder, noting Obama joked about Durant visiting but could not attend.
A young Elyria boy Marcus Jackson smiles and nods when asked about meeting President Obama. His grandmother Toni Duncan says she is happy to be there and praises the president for striving to do what is right for the country.
The Rev. Marcettes Cunningham of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Elyria endorses Barack Obama praising his inclusive style. He suggests more focus on domestic issues and greater use of Hillary Clinton for international matters. The Rev. Curtis Daniel also comments.
A Macedonia Church of Christ in God clergy member in Elyria says he would support Obama with a B grade. He praises Obama for reforming corporate America and making financial institutions more accountable, while urging more work on job creation.
Mayor Tony Krasienko may have inadvertently vetoed a 15 year 100 percent tax abatement for two west side CRAs due to a clerical error. The letter included the words and veto and the issue hinges on whether the veto stands or can be overridden after a 10 day period. Council may vote to override with eight of eleven members.
Ohio will debut an inmate email system February 23 at Madison Correctional Institution in London to reduce costs and contraband and will expand to all 31 state prisons within a month. It makes Ohio the 13th state to adopt the program joining Indiana Michigan and Pennsylvania.
Researchers at Community Research Partners say about 13.7 percent of Ohioans, roughly 1.5 million, live in poverty as wages stagnate and jobs decline in the recession. The report notes many lost roles were high paying in manufacturing and that 3.4 million Ohioans earn below 200 percent of poverty.
