Road plan in Westlake Avon area sparks maintenance debate
Westlake Mayor Dennis Clough says the city may vacate the two lane road that lacks water, sewers and residents. Developer Harry Gerent owns the parcels and plans a private subdivision near Avon Oaks Country Club. Avon Fire Chief Frank Root III warns closing could delay trauma transfers and mutual aid, with Willow Creek housing to the east. A planning committee meets Jan 29 to discuss the nuisance road. Avon offered to assume maintenance but received no reply.

Blood centers shift to male donors to reduce risk, yet donor totals lag behind demand. Lorain County notes low local donor rates and rising need for plasma and other products.

In the United States daily use of donated blood totals about 38,000 pints, separated into plasma red cells and platelets. Plasma donors include women for drug manufacturing, while TRALI risk reductions could prevent about 150 cases a year and 15 deaths, per Dr. Patricia Kopko of BloodSource.
