First YMCA pledge drive huge success in Elyria
Elyria celebrated the YMCA fund drive on April 5 1911 as T T Robinson moved the hands of a large clock past the 100000 goal to reach 127000. The event drew five thousand in Ely Park with bells, parade, and a city dinner. The drive funded a 95 000 building plus 15 000 pool, with early supporters including local businessmen and May Co donations. The paper recalls Dr Samuel Strong as a prominent 1830s Elyria physician and notes the town clock once stood on Broad Street before moving to a dealership property. In early 1911 residents planted 2000 catalpa trees and beautification efforts continued through the Garden Association and a May 27 1911 senior class play at the Rialto Theatre.

90 year old Wisconsin animal warden still on duty
Al Henrich, 90, serves two Wisconsin communities as animal warden in Norway and Waterford. He patrols in a car with a firearm permit, chased a bull with a tranquilizer gun, and continues to work despite a wooden left leg from a 1935 race crash. His longevity and calm with animals define his life on duty and off.
