Railroads Must Fight Wage Demands, Farley Says
William T. Farley told the Mid-West Shippers advisory board that railroads must resist wage demands from engineers, firemen and switchmen who threaten a Feb. 1 strike to win a 30 percent raise. He warned a victory for one group could trigger further clamor from others. He noted the unions represent about 10 percent of railroad employees and urged shelving concessions to prevent a ripple effect.
