Pride Sails For Formosa Strait 7th Fleet On Way

Vice Admiral Alfred M. Pride led the US Seventh Fleet toward the Formosa Strait as Nationalist China began evacuating up to 8,000 civilians from Ta Chen Island while U.S. carriers and destroyers moved from the Philippines for what officials called exercises and possible evacuation support amid heavy combat between Nationalist forces and Communist forces along the Formosa coast.

Bandits Steal $1,482 From Grafton Food Center

Three armed men robbed the Grafton Food Center around 8:30 pm taking $1,482 from two cash registers. They escaped in a 1954 green Mercury with ivory top, leaving customers and employees shaken. Deputies arrived seven minutes after the holdup. no injuries reported.

Eisenhower to ask Congress to authorize Formosa defense

Eisenhower seeks clear Pacific defense stance amid Tachens plan

Martin said the State Department doubts defending the Tachens islands near the Chinese mainland is feasible while the White House pushes a concrete Pacific defense area to protect Formosa. Four Cherry Hill Rebels Back In Solitary

Four convicts at Charlestown State Prison were returned to solitary after an eight hour revolt. Recreation and exercise were restored for 600 inmates as five hostages and four guards resumed routine. State detectives pursue how the four obtained two pistols and ammunition. Attorney General FinGuld vows speedy trial by mid March and heavy additional penalties.
