Foremen Honor Safety Campaign Leaders in Lorain County

Nearly 200 Lorain County foremen gathered for the Elyria Foremen’s Club meeting in January. Thomas P. Kearns of the Industrial Commission of Ohio preached safety, noting 183 firms with 149 free of accidents and a 26 percent drop in incidents in the campaign’s final month. Awards were issued to plants and 17 firms earned winner certificates, with 132 earning no accident diplomas.

Near Agreement In Rail Parley

In Chicago on January 22 leaders of capital and labor in the rail industry expect a 10 percent wage cut and employment stabilization to be effected today or tomorrow. Representatives of 1,900,000 union workers and 210 Class A railroads voiced confidence harmony had been reached. Daniel Willard of Baltimore and Ohio pledged in good faith the roads accept the union request for stabilized work. Chairman unions then consulted with additional colleagues to verify if the pledge meets their demands.

Grand Jury In 4th Day Still Far From End

Lorain county grand jurors entered their fourth day with no finish in sight and will not report before next week. Prosecutor Din W. Myers and Assistant John Harding said the session expanded due to many original cases. The jury is reindicting old cases over selection concerns and hopes a new juror panel will make reindictments acceptable.

Truck Robbery Steals $5000 Tobacco Load in 15 Minutes

Four gunmen raided Amster Kirtz Co tobacco dealers in Cleveland trapping 25 workers for 15 minutes. Police say they looted $220 from a cash register and escaped with a truck loaded with about $5000 worth of tobacco after failing to crack a $2000 safe.

Lorain County Real Estate Valuation Approved by State Tax Commission

The State Tax Commission approved Lorain county's 1931 real estate valuation as part of the 1981 re appraisal. Total values drop by 14.58 million from 1920 figures, Elyria and Lorain City show declines, while complaints remain filed with the county auditor and will go to the board of revision for possible June tax bill adjustments. The revision board, chaired by C. D. Murray, includes County Treasurer N. D. Backus and Kelser, is expected to convene around February 10.
