Lorain County Prosecutor Gregory White says he is prioritizing family and his prosecutorial role over a gubernatorial run with Bob Taft. White asked Taft to remove his name from consideration for lieutenant governor, noting he could consider statewide office in the future.
Ohio Treasurer Kenneth Blackwell will run for secretary of state, ending a planned bid for governor. His decision clears the way for Bob Taft to seek the GOP nomination and avoids a costly primary. Blackwell was set to tell the Franklin County GOP screening panel of his choice.

Lewinsky, 24, has sworn she did not have a sexual relationship with Clinton and remains firm on that claim through her attorney. The White House will cooperate with Starr.
In Elyria two city judges and three police officers topped the 1997 pay scale with Mayor Michael Keys and two administrators also in the top 10. Senior Municipal Judge John Howard earned 87,900 as an administrative judge, while Judge George Ferguson earned 86,400. Police Lt. Dennis Will ranked third with 82,577, boosted by longevity and overtime payments. Will’s base was 45,883 plus longevity pay and overtime.
Avon City Council will seek a second legal opinion over the commercial zoning of an 84 acre Detroit Road project proposed by Mitchell Schneider. The plan includes a 673000 square foot shopping plaza with a movie theater restaurants and retail space. Located at Detroit Road and Route 83 the site would exceed C-2 limits triggering C-3 planned development rules.
The Ben Hogan Golf Co plant in Elyria on Lowell Street has closed, leaving about 25 employees out of work as of December 31. General manager Clint Dugan provided no details. Spalding Sports Worldwide of Chicopee, Mass., had negotiated to buy Hogan’s product lines, including Elyria balls, but did not acquire the Elyria facility. Hogan’s factory operated in Elyria for ten years after moving production from Fort Worth, Texas.
