Hunter survives 54 days lost in sub-zero cold and snow

Robert Bailey, 28, survived 54 days in a high mountain wilderness after his hunting partner Joe Conquest, 34, was found dead near Copper Basin. Bailey trekked about 30 miles in 25 days through waist deep snow, subsisting on raw venison. He was rescued near Sun Valley Idaho and described as in good condition with minor frostbite.

Welfare case load doubles in Lorain County

Welfare figures released by Lorain County Welfare Director Gerard Prinz show last year’s new applications reached 2,882 and re applications 2,215, near double 1969 totals. By 19 days in 1971 there were 204 new applications, triple the 1970 pace, amid strikes and slow economy.

Welfare clients to get ID cards in Lorain County

Lorain County Welfare Director Gerard Prinz plans photo ID cards for welfare clients to curb check thefts. In the last seven months of 1970 there were 58 reported thefts totaling 8479 dollars, with new checks often issued. Prinz said losses occur even if thefts are not reported and that the endorser is usually held responsible. He hopes to have the cards ready by May.

Court rules Elyria must pay sick pay to Police Lt Beal

Ninth District Court of Appeals orders Elyria to pay Police Lt Eugene R Beal 375 dollars in sick pay for time off during the 1969 city employee strike. The ruling may require payment of about 110 pending sick claims from the May 22 to June 6, 1969 strike as city officials study the impact.

Pittsburgh reports a city Bureau of Refuse truck skidded on ice and smashed a policeman's car. The tow attempt failed when the truck rolled toward the Allegheny River, snapping the wrecker's chain and sinking in the river's deepest channel.

Family escapes smoke filled apartment in North Ridgeville incident

A family of three fled a second floor apartment as a kitchen fire filled the unit with smoke. Wayne Lattner, 22, smashed a window to vent air and all three adults and a baby escaped while Wayne was treated for a cut arm. The fire started from an overheated electric stove burner.

Bomb blast hits San Francisco police station

A blast blew a 3 by 5 foot hole in a Hunter's Point police station, with gunfire heard but no evidence of targeting the building. A black officer was killed by shotgun fire in 1967 during tensions in the area.

First Soap Box Derby clinic set at Midway Mall

The Lorain County Soap Box Derby hosts the first of 13 clinics Sunday at 1 30 p.m. in the Golden Crescent Room, Sears, Midway Mall Amherst Jaycees co sponsor.
