Two boys ages 11 and 14 are accused of destroying over 1000 dollars worth of holiday decorations at the Finwood Estate in Elyria. The 14-year-old admitted responsibility and all face juvenile counts of breaking and entering and vandalism. The 14-year-old also faces trespassing theft and possession of criminal tools. An 18-year-old not implicated in the decorations was charged with trespassing and theft for aiding the younger suspect at the wishing well.
James Lehane Jr woke to a smoke odor and woke his wife Barbara and their 2½ year old Brianna as flames engulfed their Churchill Drive residence. Firefighters arrived after 4:48 a.m. and battled until about 6 a.m. The blaze caused an estimated 60,000 dollars in damage, started by ashes from a wood stove, with the roof burned off over the living room, garage, and kitchen. The family has insurance and support from relatives.
Elyria faces a pothole surge after a two week deep freeze. Safety director Timothy F. Coey says warmer weather reveals breaks that expand when water freezes. Crews patch as soon as found, prioritizing hole size and damage potential, but winter limits to cold gravel patches until summer asphalt repairs.
